Live Scan Fingerprinting & Criminal Records Check Procedures for Substitute Teachers

Updated Information for Substitute Teachers

Procedures for New Substitute Teachers Printer friendly copy - PDF (86KB)

The following items are required for your fingerprinting appointment:

  • Valid Government/State-Issued Photo Identification, e.g., driver's license
  • Personal Check or Money Order for $54.00 made payable to the GISD
  • Valid or Expired Teacher's Certificate or Official Transcripts (see information below)

Valid Teacher’s Certificate: A substitute permit is no longer required until your certificate expires. You may substitute outside of your certification’s grade level and subject area for day-to-day, short-term assignments, not to exceed 90 days in the same classroom.

Expired Teacher’s Certificate: You must obtain a substitute teacher permit. You will receive a $45.00 invoice from the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). Please remit payment in the MDE-provided envelope.

For information on certificate renewal procedures, please contact the MDE at (517) 373-6895 or visit http://www.michigan.gov/mde.

Official Transcripts:

***Important***
The Michigan Department of Education requires the following regarding Official Transcripts.
  • Must be marked “Official.” We are unable to accept photocopies
  • Completed at least 90 semester or 135 quarter hours*
(*Transferred hours must be reflected on a single transcript)
  • “C” cumulative grade point average or better
  • Transcripts must be from a four-year regionally/nationally accredited college/university
  • Community college transcripts are not accepted

Once fingerprinted, you may begin applying to districts immediately. Please be aware that each district may have specific employment requirements, such as orientation classes, TB tests, etc. Until your criminal records report is received and processed by the Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) and, if necessary, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), you are considered a "conditional" applicant. Upon receipt of a satisfactory criminal history report, the GISD will either enter a substitute application on the MDE website or add your information to the GISD List of Substitute Teachers with a Valid Michigan Teacher's Certificate. Unless you have a valid teacher's certificate, you will receive a $45.00 invoice from the MDE. Please make sure to remit payment in the envelope attached to your MDE invoice.

You are only permitted to substitute on day-to-day, short-term assignments in any public or non-public district within Genesee County. Your permit will not allow for regular or extended assignments, defined as any assignment to the same classroom for more than 90 consecutive calendar days.
