to be asking the question, “When am I ever going to have to use
this?” So defining relevance at the middle school level
is more important than ever!
Middle school math and science teachers met to understand and define
career relevance at the middle school level. In this podcast, teachers
discuss simple methods and practical approaches that they found to connect
academic content with career relevance.

Students today are turned on to CSI careers, so connecting
math and science with it makes sense. Swartz Creek High School teacher
Julie Bennett asked crash scene investigators from the police department
to demonstrate the connections between physics and criminal prosecutions,
for vehicle crashes. Math and science is necessary in law enforcement
careers. Students also hear about the need for strong writing and civics
knowledge. Listen to portions of a live classroom presentation as connections
are made between academics and the real world.

How are gamma rays useful in people’s lives? Students in Meredith
Dorow’s class know the answer to this question and they also understand
how waves from the electromagnetic spectrum are useful in specific career
pathways. Dorow has created her second career pathways project for content
she already teaches in her physical science classroom. The benefit,
she says, is they’re easy to create, and they result in increased
student interest and in some cases, better test scores. Another benefit
Dorow points out is that students see the EDP process as relevant too
when they learn about new careers!
