Michigan Department of Education SB-CEUs

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is transitioning to a Secure Central Registry (SCR) which will house all SB-CEUs awarded after January 1, 2010. The SCR will allow educators to view all SB-CEUs awarded (after 01/01/2010), regardless of the SB-CEU Sponsor. The SCR will be available on a 24/7 basis and equipped with a Help Desk to answer questions regarding navigation of the SCR site. With the development and implementation of a SCR, there are changes to the way in which SB-CEUs are awarded:

  • SB-CEU Program coordinators will no longer provide offering participants with SB-CEU certificates of completion.
  • SB-CEU Coordinators will upload to the SCR those attendees eligible to be awarded SB-CEUs.
  • Eligible attendees will be sent an email with instructions on accessing the SCR and completion of a personal profile.  After the profile is completed and saved (a valid email address is required and we prefer a school email address), an attendee will be able to select an offering and complete a required common evaluation. The evaluation must be completed within 30 days of notification.  At the end of the 30 days, the evaluation is no longer available for completion and SB-CEUs will not be awarded.
  • SB-CEUs are automatically awarded and immediately listed on an Unofficial Transcript. The Unofficial Transcript will contain all the required information needed for certificate renewal: name of the offering and date(s), name of the SB-CEU Sponsor and Coordinator, Program Approval Number, and number of SB-CEUs awarded.  An Official Transcript can be purchased for a small charge.
  • SCR Instructional PowerPoint - PPT (934KB)

Many professional activities are eligible for awarding SB-CEUs. Criteria and registration process for obtaining MI SB-CEUs for professional activities is outlined in the MDE Professional Activities Eligible for Awarding SB-CEUs document. Approved activities and required forms are available below. These programs have already received approval from MDE.  Districts/individuals do not need to submit individual applications.  Those wishing to receive the MI SB-CEUs must meet the requirements outlined in the document and use the forms for these approved activities that are available below.

Eligibility

To be eligible for MI SB-CEUs for professional activities listed above, the staff member will need to fulfill the requirements outlined by MDE. Send completed forms with original signatures and required documentation to GISD (using address below) as soon as criteria has been met, preferably within 30 days of last qualifying meeting. Forms will not be accepted once a new school year has begun.

  • Activities are eligible to receive at least 3.0 MI SB-CEUs if criteria and documentation is met.
  • CEUs will be granted only once per granting period to an eligible applicant. (Example: You can get 3.0 MI SB-CEUs for Committee Participation in 2009-10; you cannot receive 3.0 MI SB-CEUs for every committee you are on. Similarly, you may be awarded 3.0 MI SB-CEUs for Mentoring, not 3.0 for each person you mentor.)
  • You must respond to the online evaluation to complete the MI SB-CEU application process.
  • Criteria documentation along with a copy of the SB-CEU Verification Form should remain on file at the building level or with the staff member.

There are also several documents relative to the SB-CEU program that are accessible at the MDE website at http://www.michigan.gov/mde/0,1607,7-140-6530_5683-219674--,00.html which will answer many questions regarding SB-CEUs and Advanced Certificate renewal.

Take some time to visit the SB-CEU website at http://www.solutionwhere.com/mi_sbceu to view details on all currently approved SB-CEU offerings.
