High Ratings for Reading Recovery by USDE

For the past 11 years the Genesee Intermediate School District Reading Recovery Site has offered individual Reading Recovery tutoring to first graders who are struggling with early reading and writing. Many students, parents, and teachers have seen excellent results for children in Genesee County. Over 5,000 children have been served at the Genesee Intermediate School District Reading Recovery Site.

In addition, our specially trained Reading Recovery teachers reach children outside of Reading Recovery because they work with other children in literacy groups, K-2 classrooms, or special education.

Recently, a report from the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) Institute of Education Sciences confirmed Reading Recovery’s effectiveness based on scientific research. The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) was established by USDE to provide educators and the public a central trusted source for determining what works in education based on scientific evidence. The WWC found that Reading Recovery has “positive effects” –the highest possible rating—on students’ alphabetic skills (phonemic awareness, phonics, and letter recognition) and general reading achievement.

Reading Recovery is a short-term early literacy intervention for first graders. Students receive a 30-minute individual lesson each school day for 12 to 20 weeks with a specially trained teacher. Nationally, Reading Recovery is in 7,500 elementary schools and has served nearly 2 million children since 1984.
