GISD's Health, Safety and Nutrition Services team coordinates the development and delivery of numerous programs and services that support the educational achievement of students. Examples include Comprehensive School Health Education and Services, SKIP to a Great Start (Successful
Kids = Involved Parents), Bridges to the Future before- and after-school programs, school safety, homeland security and child nutrition. School health consultants, health and safety facilitators, health care liaions, and parent educators are available to assist local disticts in the following:
Comprehensive School Health Education Services
- Alcohol, tobacco, and other drug education and prevention
- School safety policy development, Homeland Security staff training and risk assessment, crisis response training/ management
- Bridges to the Future before- and after-school programs
- Bridges Plus tutoring: Math and Language Arts (K-12)
- Conflict resolution/violence prevention
- School Health Services (asthma, diabetes, first aid, staff wellness, immunization coordination)
- Dental health education and screenings
- Michigan Model for Comprehensive School Health
Education curriculum development and integration, material
preparation, distribution and teacher training
- Parent education programs: Nurturing Parents, Proud Fathers-Proud Parents (PFPP) and Love & Logic

Project SKIP to a Great Start
(Successful Kids = Involved Parents)
Project SKIP is a bold venture of school districts and community partners
to build a developmental support network for preschool children in the
county. The network is generated by a set of new initiatives and expansion
of key programs available to Genesee County parents who are pregnant or
have children up to five years of age.
SKIP to a Great Start services include:
Child Nutrition Services
- Cooperative purchasing for school meal programs
- Direct certification
- Fourteen MDE/MSFSA statewide training classes offered for
all staff
- Health, Safety, and Nutrition Resource Center
- Interpretation of state and federal regulations
- Program marketing
- Product evaluation/specification development
- Specialty content workshops
- Statistical data collection and analysis
- Technical assistance via phone and on site
Genesee County Great Start Collaborative
The Great Start Collaborative is comprised of community partners who are working together to develop and improve programs and services for children from conception to school entry. All Genesee County children deserve a great start. Get Involved!
