State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs)

State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs)
SCECHs are credits awarded for Michigan Department of Education (MDE) approved in-services, workshops, trainings, conferences, and individual professional activities, that are used for the renewal of selected certificates issued by the MDE.

Individuals who hold a Provisional, Professional, School Administrator, or School Psychologist Certificate, a School Guidance Counselor License, or an Occupational Education Certificate, are eligible to use SCECHs for certificate renewal every five years. Effective June 2014, applicants may renew their Michigan Provisional certificate or progress to the Professional Education certificate by obtaining 150 professional learning hours regardless of whether they are Professional Learning Hours or District Provided Professional Development (DPPD) hours. Note:  DPPD hours cannot be used for Provisional certificate renewal.

The conversion key is as follows:

  • 1 semester credit hour = 25  DPPD hours
  • 1 semester credit = 25 SCECHs
  • 1 clock hour of DPPD = 1 SCECH

Options to earn SCECHs
Individual programs may offer SCECHs if they meet the time requirements and an application has been submitted 40 days prior to the program offering.  Several individual professional activities also offer participants the opportunity to earn SCECHs.

For programs, check with facilitator(s) at the time of registration to see if SCECHs are offered.  SCECHs cannot be granted retroactively; registration must be completed at the program. You can find out which GISD programs offer SCECHs by reviewing the course details available in the Canvas Professional Learning Catalog on the GISD website.

To see all MDE-approved SCECH programs, visit the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS) website.

In addition to attending traditional workshops/conferences, many professional activities that educators participate in throughout the school year are eligible for earning SCECHs as well.  Criteria and processes for obtaining SCECHs for professional activities are outlined by the MDE.  The GISD has filed applications for these activities on behalf of all constituent districts.  To see a list of approved activities and access requirements and forms click here: forms.
