GISD's Center for Countywide Programs staff convene stakeholders and provide statewide training courses to food service staff in a variety of areas. We also provide technical assistance to food service programs and facilitate the cooperative purchasing of dairy and bakery products via the Mid-Michigan East School Nutrition Association, which includes a number of counties in mid-Michigan.

Nutrition Education

The GISD receives federal funding from the USDA's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to provide nutrition education and physical activity promotion in Genesee and Shiawassee Counties. The GISD is dedicated to using these funds to create a  better future in our communities by working towards fighting childhood obesity, improving our community’s health and increasing access to fruits and vegetables and physical activity.

  • Early Childhood Nutrition Education:  A classroom based nutrition education program in Great Start Readiness Program, Head Start, and private based preschools focusing on fruits and vegetables as well as physical activity.
  • K-12 Classroom Nutrition Education:  A classroom based nutrition education program in eligible GISD K-12 schools focusing on Choosing MyPlate, fruit and vegetable tastings, cooking skills and physical activity.
  • Adult and Family Nutrition Education:  Adult and Family nutrition programs are offered at all eligible GISD Pre K-12 buildings as well as in the general community.  Adult and Family programs include, but are not limited to, Cooking Matters classes, parent nutrition classes, grocery store tours and health fairs.

All nutrition-related programs offered by our staff represent our commitment to providing children and families with positive experiences related to nutrition and wellness.
