A Balanced Writing Approach for Young Writers
(42 participants x 6 days plus 6 district site visits)
Biondo explored the Units of Study for Primary Writing: A Yearlong Curriculum by Lucy Calkins (2003) and other essential balanced writing components. This professional development opportunity was designed to increase teachers’ knowledge base and instructional repertoire for teaching writing. Additionally, participants studied the development of young children as writers throughout the school year.
Building Writing Communities Summer 2008
(42 participants x 7 days plus 6 district site visits)
Biondo provided first-hand insights into classroom cultures and instructional practices that research suggests are critical to nurturing and developing thoughtful, motivated, and proficient writers. The summer series included an in-depth study designed to increase teachers' pedagogical content knowledge of teaching writing.
Super Summer Success Reading Program
(43 participants x 1 day)
The goal of the Super Summer Success Reading Program is to increase educators’ awareness about the importance and benefits of developing a summer reading program. The program is designed for all students but is especially beneficial for economically disadvantaged children and less able readers.

Career Integration
Kristin Garceau worked with academic teachers in middle and high school math, science, language arts and the social studies to develop ways to make career connections within their classrooms and foster an atmosphere of relevance throughout the system.
• 6 career integration meetings and events were held to help teachers learn ways that they can make stronger connections between student interests, academics and real-world relationships (198 participants over 6 days). Three of the events were field studies for secondary instructors. They included visits to Kettering University, McLaren Hospital and the Flint Cultural Center where the secondary instructors learned first-hand where academics were used in each of the institutions. Each field Study had 36-38 instructors participating.
• 20 Audio podcasts were developed which include teachers discussing the benefits of career integration and the methods that they use in their classrooms. Podcasts are posted on the GISD website.
• Regular Career Integration News postings were developed and sent (2x each month) via email to all curriculum directors, middle/high school principals and 357 academic teachers as well as other key people involved with the project.
• Math resources including real-world challenges and videos from over 25 businesses were prepared and posted on the GISD website. Blackboard is now being used to archive the documents which are available district-wide to anyone. |
