GISD had an extraordinary day of inspiration and learning as 1st Lieutenant and reigning Miss USA Alma Cooper visited a group of Genesee County students on Monday, February 3, 2025.
Her visit began at our Genesee Career Institute, where she met with JROTC cadets, sharing insights about her military career, leadership experiences, and the impact of discipline and education in shaping her journey. As an Army officer and national role model, Cooper’s message encouraged cadets to strive for excellence and embrace opportunities for growth in both military and civilian careers.
In the afternoon, Cooper spoke to a select group of high school students participating in a grant-funded mathematics program, made possible by the Michigan Department of Education. Hosted by the University of Michigan-Flint, the event was part of “Data Science Day”, celebrating the students’ engagement in mathematics and learning real-world data science applications.
Cooper emphasized how mathematics has played a crucial role in both her personal and professional life, from navigating her military career to competing for the Miss USA title. She also discussed the educational benefits of military service and encouraged students to pursue their dreams with confidence, resilience, and a strong academic foundation.
GISD extends its gratitude to the University of Michigan-Flint, the United States Army, and all educators who helped make this event a success. More
