Free workshops being held to help ensure local students and families successfully complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application.

Flint, Mich – Thousands of dollars in financial aid for students in Genesee County goes unclaimed every year. The Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) has partnered with a local group to help change that. The sooner students apply for financial aid the better. Therefore, area graduating seniors are urged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) now!

Some familiar with the process of applying for FAFSA say it can seem like a daunting task. To help local students and families complete the application the Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) has partnered with the Genesee County Career and College Access Network (GCCCAN), in an effort to make sure families take advantage of the funding available to make college and career training possible.

“The FAFSA helps connect students to grants, loans, and work study opportunities, and it determines the amount of financial aid students receive,” said Patti Yorks, Coordinator for GCCCAN. “We understand that the process can be confusing, so we’re going to help guide students and their parents through the process of completing the application so they don’t miss out on all the financial resources available.”

The first Federal Financial Aid 101 workshop of 2020 was held on January 23rd. The second workshop is Saturday, February 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Genesee Intermediate School District Davis Education Center located at 2413 West Maple Avenue Flint, MI 48507 (Entrance #3 -Legacy Auditorium).

Skilled advisors and counselors will be on hand. Parents and students must attend the workshop together, since the application requires information from both parties. Participants should bring with them their social security card/number, as well as their 2018 Federal Income Tax Return and W2 form. There is no cost to attend.
