The Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) will host a ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony to celebrate the completion of a new Fire Training Center located on the campus of the Genesee Career Institute (GCI). Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from members of the Genesee County Firefighters Association and GCI fire training student graduates, as well as take a tour of the facility.

The addition of the Fire Training Center will allow up to 72 high school students the opportunity to enroll in the GCI Fire Training Academy each year, providing advanced study opportunities that can translate into both a Fire Certification and an EMT Certification.

WHAT: Fire Training Center Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening Ceremony
WHEN: Tuesday, August 22, 2023 | 2:30 p.m.
WHERE: Genesee Career Institute – Fire Training Center, G-5081 Torrey Road Flint, MI 48507

This new state-of-the-art facility is the first of its kind as a stand-alone fire training facility that is not part of a municipal fire department. The training facility will include areas of roof rescue, several flights of stairs and long hoses, and an apparatus bay setup with a fire truck and all equipment necessary for students to simulate loading up and responding to fire calls. This facility can also be used by our first responders to assist in their training throughout the year.

“We are excited to share this new facility with Genesee County students interested in Fire Training and Emergency Medicine,” stated Diana Allard, Executive Director of Career and Technical Education at GISD. “We are happy to help train individuals to fill the need for these positions in our county and across the state. It is an exciting time to be a student in Genesee County with lots of opportunities to learn and grow.”

In 2021, as a response to a high-demand need for firefighters, the Genesee Career Institute, in partnership with the Genesee County Association of Fire Chiefs, instituted its first Fire Training Academy for Genesee County high school students. This academy teaches students to become firefighters, receiving the same levels of training that all firefighters receive. Upon completion of the academy, students take a written and practical examination to become certified through the State of Michigan, allowing them the opportunity to step right into the firefighting field after graduation.
