The Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) Career Technical Education (CTE) Program, Michigan Laborers' Training Institute (MLTAI) and the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA) finish pre-apprenticeship construction training for the first group of Genesee County high school juniors and seniors.

Eighteen high school students from Genesee County were accepted into the on-the-job training program and worked over the summer, earning $15 per hour and full union benefits. These students are now ready to start their careers in the construction industry, and all hours worked in this program will count toward future union trade apprenticeships.

The State of Michigan recently opened up the opportunity for students under 18 to begin working in skilled trades under a structured pre-apprenticeship program. The GISD has been working with various unions to create this program for over five years.

“This is a great example of Genesee County CTE programs continuing to work to create a pipeline for our students,” stated Diana Allard, Executive Director of Career and Technical Education. “We are thankful for our partnership with LIUNA and MLTAI, and look forward to seeing students participate in this program again next year.”

Some of the Genesee County employers hiring and working with students from this program, include Fessler and Bowman, Siwek Construction and Kaltz Excavating. Learn more about this program and others provided by the Genesee Career Institute (GCI) at www.geneseecareerinstitute.org.
