College and Financial Aid Planning

As school educators, we play a vital role in preparing students for life beyond graduation. For many, this means helping them navigate the often overwhelming process of financing their education or career training. One of the most important tools in this journey is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The FAFSA is more than just a form, it’s a key that unlocks a world of financial aid opportunities. Federal grants, work-study, loans, and state programs like the Michigan Achievement Scholarship and Community College Guarantee are all tied to the FAFSA completion. Many local and institutional scholarships also require a FAFSA submission.

Whether students are pursuing college, trade schools, or apprenticeships, the FAFSA ensures they have access to the resources they need to thrive. However, many students and families are unaware of its importance or find the process daunting.

To make the FAFSA process a little easier, GISD is hosting a countywide FAFSA Workshop on Tuesday, March 25, 2025 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Erwin L. Davis Education Center. This workshop is an invaluable resource for students and their families offering one-on-one support and expert assistance. For more details and to get registered for this event, students and families should visit the event registration page.

By promoting FAFSA completion, we are helping to remove financial barriers and ensuring that every student has the chance to pursue their dreams, whether that’s attending college, completing career training, or entering the skilled trades.

Together, let’s guide the Class of 2025 toward a future full of opportunity. Encourage your students to complete the FAFSA early at FAFSA.gov and connect them with the resources they need to succeed.
