James Flowers

James Flowers, Custodian at the Erwin L. Davis Education Center. Sometimes the best journeys begin unexpectedly.
During a day off spent DoorDashing, a helpful interaction with Deana and Kayla at the front desk, and a hiring sign out front, James found himself at the start of a new chapter.

After eight years traveling the country as a self-employed contractor completing commercial DirecTV installations, it felt like the right time for a change. An interview soon made that change a reality, and today, James is proud to be part of our GISD team. Those experiences and his positive spirit are exactly why James is being recognized as the next Face of GISD.

James brings a lifetime of diverse experience to his role. After high school, he served four years in the United States Navy as a combat medic, primarily stationed with the Marine Corps. His career path has included work as a factory employee, restaurant general manager, granite and marble countertop installer, cable and satellite installer, and business owner. As James says, there are times it feels like he’s held “every job known to man.” Each role has shaped his strong work ethic, adaptability, and willingness to step in wherever needed.

As a custodian, James helps keep the building running smoothly by setting up rooms for meetings, completing daily mail runs, maintaining a clean and welcoming environment, and supporting staff in countless behind-the-scenes ways. There is truly no task he considers “not my job.” He takes pride in making sure both the building and the people inside it are cared for. One responsibility that has quickly become a fan favorite, his daily jokes! Whether thoughtfully prepared or spur-of-the-moment, if it sparks a smile or a quick laugh, James calls it a win. 

Outside of work, James enjoys staying active. He has completed several half and full marathons, along with many smaller races. He also loves camping, hiking, and traveling whenever he has the chance.

James shares this advice with our GISD community, “Don’t sacrifice the good for perfect because it doesn’t exist. Never be afraid to try something new, and from personal experience, polar plunges are not recommended.” 

We’re grateful for James’s dedication, positivity, and sense of humor. He helps keep our buildings, and our spirits, in great shape, making him a well-deserving Face of GISD!
