Throughout the month of February, Educare honored Black History Month with engaging activities and meaningful experiences for students and families. From recognizing the contributions of Black leaders to celebrating literature, music, and culture, the month was filled with learning and inspiration.

Educare classrooms created hallway displays highlighting the achievements of Black Americans in various fields, including music, literature, and innovation. Families and students had the opportunity to walk through and learn about these incredible contributions.

On February 12, Deniecea Prince, one of Educare’s Early Head Start teachers, introduced students to the violin by performing during arrival time, offering a unique musical experience for children and families. Later in the month, on February 18, Baba Collins and the Kuugana Drum and Dance group delivered an energetic and interactive performance, bringing the rhythm and joy of African drumming to Educare.

The month concluded with the 4th Annual Freedom Literacy Walk on February 28, an event designed to foster a love for reading and highlight diverse voices in literature. Families received passports upon arrival and collected stickers representing 20 different Black-authored books as they explored literacy activities throughout the event. One of the featured authors was Andrea Loyd, a former Educare staff member and author of I Spy Flint, a book that celebrates the local community.

This month-long celebration provided students and families with enriching experiences, reinforcing the importance of representation, culture, and history in education. If you would like to learn more about Genesee ISD Early Childhood programs and services, visit the website today!
