From the moment he learned about Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD), Andrew Spiece knew it was a place where innovation was a core value. Drawn to a place that truly invests in preparing students for the future, Andrew immediately felt the sense of community and care that makes GISD feel like home. “People genuinely care about students and about each other,” he shared. “That made it the right place for me.”
As a Computer Science Teacher at Genesee Career Institute, Andrew helps students explore technology, computer science, and artificial intelligence. His favorite part of the job is watching his students gain confidence. “What I enjoy most is seeing students go from being unsure or intimidated by technology to feeling confident using it to build, create, and problem-solve,” he said. Collaboration also plays a big role in his work as he partners with educators who are eager to try new tools and ideas for students.
Andrew’s impact is clear in the way students begin to think differently about the technology. “Instead of just being users of apps and devices, they begin to understand how things work and how they can create with technology themselves,” he explained. With AI in particular, Andrew helps students explore responsible and ethical use, the importance of understanding limitations, and how technology decisions affect communities. Families see students becoming more confident and curious, while staff benefit from shared learning and support as the tools continue to evolve. In honor of Computer Science Education Week, Andrew also encourages educators to explore the Hour of AI, which is a simple, engaging way to introduce students to foundational AI concepts and spark curiosity in the classroom.
This year, Andrew received a STAR Award, recognizing him as a staff member who exemplifies leadership, dedication, service, and innovation. “I don’t do this work for recognition, but it’s incredibly meaningful to feel supported by the people I work with every day,” he said. “This award reflects our teamwork and shared commitment to students.”
Looking ahead, Andrew is excited about the continued growth of computer science and AI opportunities across GISD. “My hope is that we keep leading with curiosity, responsibility, and care for one another,” he shared. “I’m truly grateful to be part of a district willing to grow with the times while keeping students at the center.”
We’re so fortunate to have Andrew as part of our GISD team! His recent STAR Award reflects the passion, innovation, and heart he brings to GISD every single day, making him the perfect choice for our Faces of GISD program!
