Josh Caswell - Faces of GISD

Meet Josh Caswell, Instructor for Project SEARCH and this week’s Faces of GISD!

For the past 13 years, Josh’s career at GISD has been defined by dedication, growth, and a deep commitment to creating opportunities for students with disabilities. His work reflects a passion for inclusive education and meaningful employment pathways.

Josh began his teaching career in Florida, gaining valuable experience at a time when opportunities in Michigan were limited. When he felt called to return home, GISD was highly recommended by a trusted colleague, Brenda Maynard, whose prior experience in the district, along with GISD’s strong reputation, made it clear this was a place where Josh could continue to learn and grow.

Since joining GISD, Josh has built a diverse career supporting students at every level. He began as an Early Kindergarten Learning Center teacher, spent eight years with RIISE (Readiness, Inclusive, Individual, and Supported Education), formerly known as Project CHOICE, and has served the past three years as a Project SEARCH Instructor. Along the way, he also worked as a CPI Instructor, supporting safe and responsive learning environments for students and staff.

Josh is especially passionate about addressing the employment gap for individuals with disabilities, where only about 23 percent are employed. Through Project SEARCH, he and his team aim to raise employment outcomes to 70 percent by breaking down stigmas, building community partnerships, and creating meaningful opportunities for students. His impact is seen in student successes and in the strong relationships he builds with local businesses. Each success story highlights the importance of his work in creating pathways to meaningful employment and a more inclusive community.

The most rewarding part of Josh’s work is seeing the difference he and his team make in students’ lives. He values being part of a team that encourages creativity, innovation, and thoughtful risk-taking to help students build independent futures. He credits the support of his administrator, Jan Cox, and his skills trainer, Tracy Fritzler, whose collaboration plays a critical role in student success.

Josh is currently enrolled in the GISD Administrative Leadership Academy and is passionate about expanding Project SEARCH while pursuing a future role in administration. As he shared, while teachers impact individual students, leaders can influence entire systems.

Reflecting on his journey, Josh remains grateful for the mentorship and opportunities that have shaped his path. GISD has supported his growth through earning his CI endorsement and participating in leadership programs. In return, Josh is committed to giving back by creating opportunities for students and strengthening inclusive pathways to success.

Josh’s dedication to students, commitment to growth, and leadership within inclusive education make him a powerful example of what it means to be a Face of GISD.
