On Sunday, January 12, students from Genesee Career Institute (GCI) were honored at the District 10 Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) awards dinner for their participation in the Voice of Democracy contest. This annual national writing competition challenges students to reflect on a patriotic theme, with this year’s prompt asking, "Is America Today Our Forefathers' Vision?"
GCI students wrote, practiced, and recorded their speeches for judging in October 2024. Their hard work paid off, as three students placed in the top five:
•
1st Place: Stella Moors (Goodrich), sponsored by Swartz Creek Post 3720
•
4th Place: Olivia Ormsby (Genesee Early College), sponsored by Grand Blanc Post 822
•
5th Place: Lillian Moore (Fenton), sponsored by Fenton Post 3243
Adding to the celebration, Marketing & Communications Teacher Mr. Crawford was recognized as District 10 Patriotic Teacher of the Year for 2024-25, sponsored by Swartz Creek Post 3720.
Stella Moors’ first-place finish qualifies her to compete at the VFW State of Michigan meeting. She will represent District 10 and aim for a chance to attend the national competition in Washington, D.C., later this year.
Congratulations to all the students and educators who made this remarkable achievement possible!
