/Congratulations! Myelle Chaney.png)
GISD is proud to celebrate
Genesee Early College (GEC) grade 11 student Myelle Chaney, whose poem,
Where You Once Stood, was recently published in Qua, the University of Michigan–Flint’s student-run literary and fine arts magazine.
Myelle’s publication is a meaningful achievement and a strong example of what happens when students take creative risks and fully engage in learning beyond the classroom. By submitting her work for publication, she demonstrated confidence, initiative, and a willingness to share her voice, qualities our early and middle college programs are designed to support.
This recognition reflects the opportunities available to students enrolled in early college programs, where they are immersed in post-secondary environments while still in high school. Through these experiences, students develop their talents, challenge themselves academically and creatively, and contribute to college-level communities in authentic ways.
We congratulate Myelle on this accomplishment and look forward to seeing how her writing continues to grow.
Where You Once Stood
by Myelle Chaney
The room still breathes where you once stood,
a whisper caught in worn out wood.
Your coffee cup remains half-full
or half-full forgotten. Both feel cruel.
I speak and silence answers back,
the clock ticks on, its rhythm slack.
Time does not mourn. It only moves,
washing out the worn-out views.
I never thought you would go so soon,
and leave me here with just your room.
If time could turn its face my way,
I would give it all for you to stay.
