GISD in collaboration with Genesee Health System and local area school districts is hosting the 2nd Annual Mental Health Symposium on October 15, 2024, at the Genesys Conference and Banquet Center, 508 Health Park Blvd., Grand Blanc. The symposium will offer two sessions. The first session
(registration closed) is for all school staff from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and the second session is for parents and mental health professionals, as well as school staff unable to attend during the day, from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Hosting the symposium for the second year gives GISD the opportunity to continue the conversation and learn new strategies that focus on mental health support systems for students and families in Genesee County.
New this year, we are inviting the community to a session to hear from Keynote Speaker, Angela Pharris, Ph.D., MSW on the Science and Power of Hope. Dr. Pharris is an assistant professor in the Anne & Henry Zarrow School of Social Work at the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Pharris is also the Director of the Center for Child Welfare Training and Senior Research Fellow at the Hope Research Center.
In addition to Pharris’ keynote address, topics will include student mental health and well-being, stress management and coping strategies, trauma-informed practices, mental health support for staff, promoting a positive school culture, and parent and community engagement in mental health.
