GISD is pleased to welcome a new member to its Board of Education. After notifying the community of an available vacancy and holding public interviews, the board selected Rafael C. Turner as the new GISD Board of Education Trustee during a public meeting held on Monday, September 16, 2024.
A board seat became available with the recent announcement of Larry P. Ford’s retirement. Rafael C. Turner will serve the remainder of the vacated term, which ends June 30, 2025.
“I look forward to meaningful student, parent, and teacher engagements that directly impact the success and well-being of all students in Genesee County and beyond,” said Rafael C. Turner. “I am excited to continue this journey of empowering other parents and caregivers who collaborate with the GISD and local school districts to help our students reach their full potential. As a proud parent of a GISD student, I will bring a perspective to the board that recognizes the uniqueness of each student and the essential role that families play in positive educational outcomes, both in the classrooms and in communities we serve.”
Turner brings a wealth of experience as an effective leader with a record of achievements in overseeing strategic and tactical planning and the development and execution of initiatives that drive program growth and expansion. He has a Master of Public Administration and is currently the Community Affairs Manager at Consumers Energy. He previously held the position of Program Officer at Ruth Mott Foundation. Turner also serves on the Board of Directors for Genesee, Shiawassee, Thumb (GST) Michigan Works, the Board of Directors for YMCA of Greater Flint, the Regional Leadership Council for the Flint and Genesee Group, as well as other leadership and professional affiliations.
Turner took his oath of office immediately after his appointment at the GISD Board of Education meeting on September 16, 2024.
