Genesee ISD Announces Mr. Ford's Retirement
Congratulations to Mr. Larry Ford, our longest-serving Board of Education member. After 48 years, Mr. Ford has announced his retirement from the Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) Board of Education, effective September 1, 2024.
Mr. Ford was elected to the GISD Board of Education in 1977. However; prior to that, he served on the Westwood Heights Board of Education from 1970 – 1978, which means he has been an elected school board member in Genesee County for 54 years!
Mr. Ford has served every role on the Board of Education, including president for multiple terms. He has earned the President’s Award of Distinction from the Michigan Association of School Boards and has encouraged all of his colleagues on the GISD Board of Education to work towards that same distinction.
“My time spent serving the students, families, and educators of Genesee County has provided me with some of my most rewarding and challenging experiences,” stated Larry P. Ford. “It has been a privilege and honor to serve.”
Although serving on the school board has been Mr. Ford’s “labor of love” his servant leadership expands beyond schools. He also served as the President of the Flint Area Chamber of Commerce for 30 years and continues to serve on the Flint Township Planning Commission.
As a Flint Northern and Flint Jr. College (Mott Community College) graduate, Mr. Ford has deep roots in the Flint community. He has been involved in the Boy Scouts of America, Easter Seal Society, the Urban Coalition of Greater Flint, and an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church. He is also a proud veteran of the United States Army, and a U.S. Army Reservist. To this day, Mr. Ford gives back to his fellow veterans as a member of the Honor Guard.
Mr. Ford was recognized for his long-standing leadership at GISD back in 2019, when the largest meeting space at the Erwin Davis Education Center was renamed the Legacy Auditorium with a specific section named in honor of Mr. Larry P. Ford.
We sincerely thank Mr. Ford for his tireless service to the Genesee Intermediate School District!
