Flint - Students and staff of the Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) are excited to congratulate the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) cadets at the Genesee Career Institute on winning big in state and regional competitions.

Cadets enrolled in the JROTC program at the Genesee Career Institute (GCI) competed in the State of Michigan Drill Championship as the Black Knight Drill team. They won first place for the fourth consecutive year! Nineteen schools from across the state gathered at the Detroit Light Guard Armory to determine who is best. GCI cadets won the Platoon and Squad divisions, as well as the inspection.

The team also placed fourth in Color Guard and third in the First-year cadet events. And Cadet Connor Henry (Genesee Early College) also won the Individual Drill Competition. The students were proud to be awarded for their work, but some say the team’s success has a deeper meaning.

"Winning is great, but it is the discipline and teamwork that continues to shine through. It shows that when 25 team members work together and persevere despite challenges along the way, great things can be accomplished," Battalion Commander, Cadet Allison Bell-Green (Swartz Creek High School).

The Black Knight Drill team will now prepare to compete in the Brigade Championship at Fort Knox Kentucky in the spring.

The JROTC Rifle Team is award winning as well. In November, The Rifle Team competed in the first round of the National JROTC Rifle Competition at their new rifle range. Twenty-Eight cadets fired from the prone, in both kneeling and standing positions to complete the course of fire. Connor Kendrick (Goodrich HS), William Westra, (Goodrich HS), Theodore Gillett (Swartz Creek HS) and Baylei Cameron (Davison HS) scored the highest in the Battalion, which resulted in a team score of 944.

The Rifle Team placed first overall in Michigan, and sixth in the 5-State Region! Joshua Kaczorowski (Grand Blanc HS) and Jacob Schweigert (Lake Fenton HS) will join the top four cadets to compete in the American Legion State Championship in January. Kudos to Connor Kendrick, who earned the teams’ top score of 248!
