We are proud to announce that students from our Genesee Career Institute (GCI) Digital Art, Design & Broadcasting (DADB) program won multiple awards at the Graphic Communication Education Association (GCEA) national conference.
At the 98th Annual Membership & Professional Development conference held at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence, Rhode Island, the 2023 Gutenberg Awards were announced. These national awards recognize students enrolled in secondary and post-secondary education programs in printing and graphics for their excellent work in traditional and digital photography, web work, as well as offset lithography printing, and pre-press electronic design.
The talented team of DADB students from GCI were honored with three first-place awards, four second-place awards, two fourth-place awards, one fifth-place award, and two best-of-show awards for a department record of 17 total national awards. Nicholas Demaray of Fenton earned the coveted Best-of-Show for an Individual award for his original illustration and book entry, “Talos Resort”. The DADB department also won Best-of-Show for a Group with the entry, “Peace Project” which includes a limited print run of various button designs given freely to Japanese elementary students that annually visit the Atomic Bomb & Peace Museum located in Nagasaki, Japan.
“We are extremely honored to have our students receive these multiple national awards, and for the first time, to be the school that takes home both the individual and group best-of-show awards,” stated Michael Crawford, DADB Teacher at GCI, and member of the GCEA. “Print continues to be very strong in all segments of the world economy, including helping brands and organizations realize billions of dollars of profit. Print thrives vivaciously in creative graphic identity systems and various signage to innovative brand advertising campaigns and eye-catching packaging.”
The GCEA is made up of six regions, including five in the United States and one internationally. The Gutenberg Awards are announced each year by the GCEA during their annual summer conference. Students print and graphic imaging work is judged from both secondary and post-secondary graphic communication programs completed during the previous school year.
