Head Start logo   FLINT – The start of the 2020-2021 school year is fast approaching. The Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) early childhood staff are continuously working to determine the best and most effective format for instruction while addressing concerns and issues related to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Parents are encouraged to register their children for programs now, even if they aren’t sure yet about what they plan to do.

“We understand that safety is the primary concern of most parents as it should be,” said Catrina Wiskur, Director of Early Childhood Programs for GISD. “We know that birth to age five is an important period in a child’s development, so establishing a strong educational foundation is key. Our goal is to provide that in the safest manner possible.”

Parents interested in pursuing in-person or virtual learning this school year should indicate which learning option they prefer on their child’s interest form. To submit a preschool interest form visit or call 591-KIDS (591-5437).

“Once the application process is underway, families are a step closer to knowing what programs they qualify for and being connected to those programs,” added Wiskur. “Even if a child is accepted into a program, a parent can ask for their child to be placed on a waitlist if they aren’t quite ready for them to participate.”

Genesee County parents are urged to submit a preschool interest form for each child under five years of age. Children who will be five by September 1, 2020, are eligible for kindergarten.
