  • Wednesdays from 7:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

  • Personal check, credit cards, debit cards, or money order for $62.00 made payable to the GISD
  • Valid or expired teacher's certificate or official transcripts (see information below)

Valid Teacher Certificate

A substitute permit is not required unless your certificate expires. You may substitute outside of your certification’s grade level and subject area for day-to-day, short-term assignments. You may not to exceed 90 days in the same classroom. Upon receipt of a satisfactory criminal history report, the GISD will add your information to the GISD List of Substitute Teachers with a Valid Michigan Teacher's Certificate.

Expired Teacher Certificate

You must obtain a substitute teacher permit. The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) will email a $45.00 payment link to you that is payable only with a debit or credit card. Once paid, your substitute teacher permit is valid until August 31st of the school year for which the permit is approved and must be renewed each school year.

Official Transcripts

You must obtain a substitute teacher permit. The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) will email a $45.00 payment link to you that is payable only with a debit or credit card. Once paid, your substitute teacher permit is valid until August 31st of the school year for which the permit is approved and must be renewed each school year.

The Michigan Department of Education requires the following regarding Official Transcripts:

  • Must be marked "Official"
  • Photocopies are not accepted
  • Permit requires a minimum of 60 semester hours
  • “C” cumulative grade point average or better
  • Transcripts must be from one or more regionally accredited two- or four-year college or university in accordance with Michigan Compiled Law (MCL) 380.1233

Once fingerprinted, you may begin applying to districts immediately. You are considered a "conditional applicant” until your criminal history report is received and processed by the Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) and, if necessary, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). GISD will maintain a copy of your criminal history record.

A substitute teacher is permitted to substitute teach on day-to-day, short-term assignments in any public or non-public district within Genesee County. Your permit does not allow for regular or extended assignments (defined as, any assignment to the same classroom for more than 90 calendar days).

Each district and/or substitute placement company would be considered your employer and may have specific employment requirements, such as orientation classes, TB testing, etc. Questions regarding employment should be directed to the district or employment company.

You will not need to be fingerprinted again as long as you remain employed by a school district or educational company with no separation of service greater than six-months. To be considered “current” please ensure that you work at least one day between September – December and at least another day between January – June of each school year. Failure to pay the MDE substitute permit fee, within 30 days, will result in a rescinded permit and will be considered a separation from service.
