English for Speakers of Other Languages

History and Purpose

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program at the Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) was developed in 1993 through a collaboration with the UM-Flint's Bilingual Education Program. Its purpose is to assist schools in Genesee County in providing a more comprehensive education for multilingual learners.

In 1997, GISD continued the ESOL program after the Bilingual Education Program at UM-Flint was discontinued. GISD's ESOL program provides English language development instruction to students who are multilingual learners, and instructional support to school districts and their building staff.
