Pre-Apprenticeship

Construction Pre-Apprenticeship Program

Applications are closed for the Summer '23 session.  Check back again in Spring '24 for Summer '24 session.

The Construction and General Laborers Pre-Apprentice Program is provided in partnership with the Michigan Laborers' Training Institute (MLTAI) and the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA).  This is one of the first programs that allows High School students to earn hours and experience toward future union apprenticeship opportunities.

The summer program is limited in class size and offered for 8 weeks between June and August. Students receive the Related Training Instruction (RTI) for 4 weeks at MLTAI in Perry, MI in combination with 4 weeks of "On the Job Training" (OJT) with dedicated industry contractors.

Students are engaged in 8 hours a day during both RTI and OJT segments. During this time students also receive compensation including a stipend of $60 a day for training and $15 per hour and union benefits (valued at $20-$25/hour) during On the Job Training. Students must agree to participate in the program orientation and interview process as well as complete the full 8 week program.  Students must be available for the full 8 week, and not able to attend sports practice or other non-emergency events during work time.  Students will be expected to ride the bus from the Genesee Career Center to LiUNA in Perry.
