Our Program

The Transition Center is a balanced academic year program designed for students with moderate cognitive impairments and autism spectrum disorder. Young adults can attend the program through one of the following referral avenues:

  • Students who are 18 years and older, have completed four years of high school, and qualify for continuing special services with a Certificate of Completion and fall within the MoCI range;

  • Students who have completed high school programming within GISD RIISE program; and

  • Students at Elmer Knopf Learning Center who show increased employability skills and desire to work.

Students in the program will have the opportunity to attend various classes within the building and develop work skills in the community through different work sites. While attending the Transition Center, students will be assigned to caseloads tailored to their individual needs in order to develop pivotal skills as they increase their independence to adulthood. While still in school, a big focus is geared towards connecting with community agencies, exploring employment opportunities, and considering options such as Project SEARCH or Launch for their final year.

Transition Center students can use the links below to learn about Michigan’s in-demand occupations and the State and regional outlook for careers.
