Grade 12
Teacher: Mr. Wes Wiltse
Program: Construction Trades

Gabe has always been a hard working student, who I have always relied on to be an excellent leader to his peers. His skills and confidence in the construction trades have grown greatly over the last three years. His craftsmanship and work ethic is top notch.

During the summer of 2019 Gabe was my first student to complete a pre-apprenticeship program. This program is a new partnership with GBHS, LiUNA! Local 1075 and the Michigan Laborers’ Training and Apprenticeship Institute (MLTAI).

The MLTAI Director, Lynn Colman, had the following comments regarding Gabe’s time in this pre-apprentice program, “Gabriel Youngs attended the Pathways to Apprenticeship program which consists of 5 weeks of Construction Training and 5 weeks of work with a contractor over the summer. Gabe was the only student attending from Grand Blanc Schools, but that didn’t stop him. Gabe was put in class with Oakland County students where he shined in many ways. Gabe was always one of the first to step up when there was something new to practice or demonstrate, or the first to talk to another student to remove any fears or nervousness. In this day and age, students like this, don’t come along often. Work ethic, timeliness and participation were never a problem with Gabe. This is definitely a student driven to be the best he can be at whatever life throws at him.”

After the training was completed, Gabe went to work for the LiUNA! Local 1075 contractor E & L Construction Group in Flint for an additional five weeks. His attitude and work ethic was also spoken very highly of during his time on the job-site. I have been very proud to have a student from our GBHS Construction Trades program become such a valued member of the industry. He definitely has a very bright future ahead of him in construction.

In addition to the LiUNA training, Gabe has completed his coursework for his Residential Builders license with the State of Michigan. He is currently studying to take the test for licensure in the near future.
